T’s Green and sister shop Omachi Bring a Bright Colorful World of Tea and Sweetness【Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture】

T’s Green is a Japanese green tea cafe located a 10-minute walk from JR Abekawa Station. The fresh deep steamed tea and sweets sourced directly from local tea farmers have gained popularity for their delicious taste, and in February 2020, a sister store, T’s Green Omachi, opened in the downtown area of Shizuoka City. In addition to the great taste, the shop’s glittering sweet decorations have become a hit on social media, attracting many people, especially young wlomen.

This article also includes an interview with Tsutomu Kamiya, president of T’s Green, about their café menu and commitment to their customers.

T’s green

The exterior of the restaurant has a chic and relaxed atmosphere. Stepping inside, one’s appetite is whetted by the aroma of grilled dumplings from the grill on the counter.

On the shelves displaying tea and tea utensils, there is a tea-dyeing product made by Kyoichiro Washizu, famous for the traditional Shizuoka craft of “Suruga Wazome.” T’s Green tea was once used as a raw material for tea dyeing.

T’s Green has often been featured in the media, and the many celebrity autographs on display are proof of its popularity. During the daytime, the café is crowded with local people, mainly elementary school students and the elderly, and is open until 7:00 p.m., making it a good place for working people to stop by and take a breather after work on weekdays.

T’s Green Cafe Menu

T’s Green offers fresh fukamushicha (deep steamed green tea) directly from farmers in Kanaya, Shimada City, and its green tea-based confections are seasoned to match the tea. Here is a small introduction to T’s Green’s café menu.

Moonlight + Matcha Latte

A café menu inspired by the scene of a moonlit night in autumn. Caramel roasted ice cream imitating the moon, matcha pound cake representing silver grass, and five kinds of fried dumplings (salted azuki bean paste, salted caramel, fried isobe, sesame Shizuoka green tea, and sesame chili pepper) served in the shape of the moon.

All the sweetness goes well with the mild and rich fukamushicha. Refills of tea are available upon informing the waiter that you have finished your first cup.

Matcha latte ordered separately is also refreshing and easy to drink with just the right amount of sweetness.

Oshiruko and Isobe Set

Sweet oshiruko with mochi and 2 dumplings, sweet Isobe baked dumplings, salty plum tea, and rich, soft, deep steamed tea. This set menu is recommended when you want to relax and take a break.

Ochaya Pudding Parfait

This parfait includes Shizuoka green tea pudding, pound cake, karinto buns, seasonal fruit, caramel ice cream, and fresh cream. The parfait is flavored to pair pleasantly with the green tea served alongside.

Luxury Emerald Sweet

Fried dumplings (choose your favorite one from the menu), karinto buns, today’s Shizuoka green tea, raw chocolate, pound cake of the day, Shizuoka green tea pudding, caramel hojicha ice cream, and tea (free refills).

This set is unique to T’s Green, where you can enjoy the chewy texture of freshly baked dango dumplings with the pleasant chewiness of freshly fried karinto buns together.

Suruga Gorgeous (summer time only)

Five types of shaved ice: matcha, deep steamed green tea, sencha, hojicha, and Japanese black tea; five types of fried dango: salted azuki bean paste, salted caramel, fried isobe, sesame and Shizuoka tea, and sesame and red pepper. The special summer-only menu allows you to compare a total of 10 different flavors, ensuring satisfaction until the very last bite.

At T’s Green, the time required to serve each menu item is listed on the menu list, so you can use it as a guide when ordering take-out menus.

What is T’s Green Omachi?

T’s Green Omachi is a tea café located in Shichiken-cho, Aoi-ku, Shizuoka City, and is a sister store of T’s Green.

The interior of T’s Green Omachi is more glamorous and brighter than T’s Green.

There are many restaurants in the neighborhood, and it is mainly used by young women as a place to take a break after a meal or to take a rest in the afternoon.

Like T’s Green, T’s Green Omachi also sells green tea and tea utensils, and offers some of its café menu for takeout.

An Introduction to the Cafe Menu at T’s Green Omachi

T’s Green Omachi offers a café menu different from that of T’s Green, featuring fresh fukamushicha (deep steamed green tea) and sweet dishes that go well with the tea. Here is a small introduction to their menu.

Kirabiyaka

Includes three types of warabimochi (hojicha warabimochi, matcha warabimochi, and Japanese black tea warabimochi), three types of raw chocolate, and salty tea leaf tsukudani. Kuromitsu and condensed milk as a garnish. One beverage of your choice from the menu.

The menu is varied and enjoyable, with several different sweet dishes to complement the tea.

▲The tea leaf tsukudani (preserved food boiled in soy sauce and sugar) in the “Kirabiyaka” menu gives a nice accent of saltiness between the sweets and the tea.

OMACHI Set

Consists of raw green tea chocolate, fried dumplings (choose one dumpling of your favorite flavor from the menu), matcha milk warabimochi, karinto buns, and tea mousse. Choose one beverage of your choice from the menu.

The arrangement is so sparkling and gorgeous that one is tempted to take a picture of it. When you order a latte, the word “tea” is written on the surface, and it is almost too good to drink.

Omachi’s Spring Color (hojicha version)

The parfait includes strawberries, caramel ice cream, whipped cream, pound cake, tea agar, green tea warabimochi, azuki beans, kuromitsu, and plum kelp tea. Choose one of your favorite beverages from the menu.

The elaborately arranged and beautiful parfait can be further enjoyed by dipping it in gorgeous kuromitsu.

Interview: T’s Green wants to spread the appeal of green tea with a spread of complementary delicacies.

We interviewed Tsutomu Kamiya, President of T’s Green.

Why did you open T’s Green?

–Please tell us about T’s Green.

Initially, the store was a simple shop selling green tea from my wife’s family’s tea farm. However, if the products were limited to green tea, the clientele would be limited as well.

We decided to reopen T’s Green as a sweet shop, offering dumplings and other sweet treats for customers to enjoy with their green tea.

We now offer a variety of menu items, but in the early days we only offered three kinds of dumplings and strawberry shaved ice.

As we continued to operate the restaurant, through trial and error the menu gradually expanded and we were able to solidify the concept of the restaurant.

The difference between T’s Green and its sister store T’s Green Omachi.

–What is the difference between T’s Green and its sister store T’s Green Omachi?

T’s Green in Kamata, Suruga-ku has customers of all ages, from children to the elderly, so we strive to be a community-based store with a friendly atmosphere.

T’s Green Omachi, located in the downtown area of Shizuoka City, attracts many young customers, so we created an atmosphere and menu based on the concepts of “fashionable” and “high-class.”

–Do you offer different menus at T’s Green and T’s Green Omachi?

We have a wide range of customers of all ages, probably due to the fact that there are not many places that serve tea and sweet dishes in the neighborhood. Therefore, our menu is based on a relaxed, Japanese-inspired format.

T’s Green Omachi is located in a busy downtown area, and many of its customers are young women, so the menu is stylish and glamorous. Therefore, even if the menu items are similar, they are presented in a different way with different plates and small umbrellas to provide a sense of excitement.

–So you have put a lot of thought into the atmosphere of the location of each store.

At both T’s Green and T’s Green Omachi, we try to create a menu and seasoning that allows sweetness and tea to complement each other. However, the presentation and menu structure may vary to suit the customer’s tastes in accordance with the location.

Sometimes, we take into consideration the opinions of our younger staff members, and we are all happy to see our creative menu uploaded on social networking sites (laughs).

T’s Green promotes the appeal of Japanese green tea

As we have learned through our interactions with other people in the industry, many cafes are run by wholesalers who sell loose leaf tea while opening their own cafes gradually.

However, T’s Green is the opposite, where a tea wholesaler started selling retail while operating a café. I myself was originally a construction salesman, so I was in a completely different field from the tea business. Every day is a learning experience.

Tea wholesalers sometimes ask me, “How should I run my cafe business?”, then I ask the tea wholesaler, “How should I do wholesale?” and we have a lot of fun exchanging information with each other (laughs).

Tea can play a leading or supporting role, and I would like to spread the appeal of tea by providing delicious dishes that complement tea at both T’s Green and T’s Green Omachi!
